The three-member rescue team who saved the life of the third engineer, a Filipino national of the fire-stricken MT New Diamond tanker visited him at the Kalmunai Base Hospital on Sunday to wish him well.

The Navy sprang into action to bring ashore the injured MT New Diamond crew member and rush him to hospital for immediate treatment following the oil tanker fire on September 3.

After receiving treatment from the Kalmunai Base Hospital, the Filipino national is presently being treated at a private hospital in Colombo. The members of the rescue team, Lieutenant KGASM Wijerathne, Leading Engineering Mechanic DLK Mudiyanse and Able Seaman WGGU Senarathne shared their experiences of the past turn of events.

It was a daring effort to bring the third engineer who was lying on an alleyway in the upper deck, surrounded by flames and smoke, to the weather deck due to the prevailing situation aboard. The Filipino national said he was lucky to have been saved and expressed his deep gratitude to the Naval personnel.

This operation was a success thanks to the prompt action taken by the Commanding Officer of SLNS Ranarisi which reached the site of the distressed ship first, paving the way for the Navy to save another person in distress.
