Govt MPs in extensive study of 20A - Gevindu

The Yuthukama Organization Chairman and SLPP MP Gevindu Kumaratunga yesterday said the Government Parliamentary Group held extensive discussions on the draft 20th Amendment to the Constitution and a proposal was made to form a committee in this regard at this meeting.

Kumaratunga said that President has promised to issue a new Gazette notification rectifying the shortcomings in the draft 20th Amendment to the Constitution. He was addressing a press conference in Colombo yesterday.

He said that the government has set an example by giving an ear to the people’s voice.

“The 20th Amendment to the Constitution is brought to rectify shortcomings in the 19th Amendment”, he said.

Kumaratunga said this new Amendment is effective until a new Constitution is enacted. He said experts in law involved in drafting the 20th Amendment to the Constitution are trying to make it a more people friendly one.

“Our organization is of the view that country should have a President. But a despotic ruler like J.R. Jayawardene or a naïve person like Maithripala Sirisena will not benefit the country”.
