Five new EPZs in next two years

The Government will establish five Export Processing Zones (EPZs) in the next two years.

Civil Aviation and Export Zone Development State Minister D.V. Chanaka said yesterday that they have focused mainly on developing the manufacturing sector which is the main target with a strong emphasis on attracting electronics, information technology, automotive, electrical equipment, rubber products and pharmaceuticals.

Chanaka said that selected investors will be allowed to establish relevant factories after developing infrastructure facilities in the areas following the approval received from necessary institutions including the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA).

The State Minister also directed officials to expedite construction work of two new EPZs in Bingiriya and Milleniya since there were no lands existing in Katunayake, Biyagama, Seethawaka and Koggala EPZs to establish new factories.
