Former President, PM were vary of arresting extremists in East due to diplomatic issues - Ministry Secretary

Former Law and Order Ministry Secretary Jagath Wijeweera on Saturday said that former President Maithripala Sirisena and former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had informed the Security Council that any arrest of Muslims in the East involved in extremist activities could trigger diplomatic issues.

Jagath Wijeweera, who is the Media Ministry Secretary, told the Presidential Commission investigating the Easter Sunday attacks on Saturday that the former President and the Prime Minister informed the Security Council to be alert on extremist activities in the Eastern Province and Muslim countries will exert pressure on the government if Muslims in the Eastern province are arrested by the security agencies.

Wijeweera said the Yahapalana government did not have a backbone to take right decisions against extremism. He presumed that Muslim Ministers might have been behind these lukewarm approaches adopted by the Yahapalana government.

He told the Commission that former IGP Pujith Jayasundera did not attend that meeting. Wijeweera said IGP Jayasundera was not called for the meeting due to the tussle between the then President and the Prime Minister.

He told the Commssion that he came to know later that the former President had made a request from Prime Minister Wickremesinghe to remove IGP Pujith Jayasundera from his position.

He said that many information on the National Thowheed Jamath organization and its leader Saharan Hashim were unearthed by the intelligence services in 2017. He also said that he received a transfer in December 2017.
