The water levels in the Castlereagh and Maussakelle Reservoirs are close to spill level in the heavy rains on the western slopes of the central highlands.

The water level in Castlereagh Reservoir is 2 feet above the overflow level, and the water level in Maussakelle Reservoir is 6 feet above the overflow level, the engineers in charge of the reservoirs said.

With the increase in water levels in the reservoirs, the hydro power plants at Canyon, Laxapana, New Laxapana, Polpitiya and Wimalasurendara are generating electricity at their maximum capacity.

The Hatton Police warns drivers to be careful, while they are driving on the Hatton-Nuwara Eliya and Hatton-Colombo main roads due to the occasional heavy snowfall in the central hills.
