Man dies while mining for gems

A man who had attempted gem mining in the Bloomfield section of Brunswick Estate in Maskeliya died due to an earth slip around 9.00 pm on Saturday (12).

The deceased who did not have a licence for gem mining has been identified as Ramasamy Amilachandran, 21, a father of one and a resident of Bloomfield, Brunswick Estate, Maskeliya.

According to the police, estate workers launched a search operation when the wife of the victim told them that her husband has not returned home. The estate workers found the body yesterday (13) morning.

Maskeliya Police had then sent the body to the Specialist Judicial Medical Officer of the Dik-oya Base Hospital for the postmortem. When the body was recovered, the victim had been holding on to an iron crow bar, police said.

Maskeliya Police are conducting investigations.
