Tourism Ministry develops Batticaloa as tourist hub

Tourism Ministry Secretary S. Hettiarachchi called on Batticaloa Government Agent Kalamathy Pathmaraja and her officials at the District Secretariat on Saturday and discussed regional development.

They discussed the ways to develop the Dutch Fort to attractive more tourists and agreed to seek support from the Department of Archeology in this regard.

An exhibition centre will be set up at the Fort and cultural, religious and social items will be displayed there. Thoppigala, Unnichchai, Pondugalsenai and Panichchankerny have been identified as other areas to be developed as tourist attractions. A floating restaurant has been suggested to be set up at the Batticaloa lagoon at the discussion

Thoppigala will be developed as an observation centre to view and research wildlife, flora and fauna. The lighthouse in Palameenmadu and the bird sanctuary in Pillaiyarady will be developed as tourist attractions as well.

Batticaloa District Additional Government Agents Sudarshini Srikanth and Navarubaranjani Mugunthan, Planning Director Sasikala Punniyamoorthy, officials from the Coastal Conservation and Environment, and Non-Government Organisations were present.
