Main railway stations to be modernised

Transport Minister Gamini Lokuge said yesterday that the main railway stations across the country including the Colombo Fort Railway Station will be modernized with improved facilities to provide comfortable and safe train journeys for local as well as foreign commuters.

The Minister was speaking during the inspection tour of the Colombo Fort Railway Station recently.

The Minister said that attention has been paid to implement a joint programme with the support of the Trade Ministry to establish service areas at railway stations to purchase food, goods and services required by local and foreign travelers.

It was decided to repair railway carriages to provide a better service. The Minister further said the Colombo Fort and four other railway stations will be modernised as a pilot project.

The Minister said that by increasing the number of trains, more people will be able to travel by the Kelani Valley Railway Line.
