PM tells producers: Provide eggs at a fixed wholesale price

Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday said he had instructed the Minister of Education to look into the possibility of providing an egg daily to all School children to improve their nutritional status.

The Prime Minister stated this at a meeting with the Bakery Owners 'Association and the Egg Producers' Association at his official residence at Wijerama Mawatha, according to a statement issued by the Prime Ministers Media Division.

The Bakery Producers' Association briefed the Prime Minister on the impact of egg prices on bakery products and explained the high cost of egg production.

The Egg Producers' Association emphasized at this meeting that it is possible to provide eggs at a fixed wholesale price to all bakeries in the island.

Accordingly, the Prime Minister informed the delegates to reach an agreement between the two associations in a manner which helps to provide relief to the consumers.

During the meeting, the Prime Minister instructed the Ministers in charge of the subjects to reduce the price of baby chicks to between Rs. 175-200 and to intervene in reaching an agreement between the egg producers and the bakery owners.

State Minister for Cooperative Services, Marketing Development and Consumer Protection Lasantha Alagiyawanna, State Minister of Livestock, Farm Development and Dairy and Egg Industries D.B. Herath and Additional Secretary to the Prime Minister Amanda Karunatilake were also present at the occasion.
