Channa to continue as chairman of Old Trinitians Rugby Scrummage

Channa Pathirana one of the finest rugby forwards of the mid 1990’s will continue as the chairman for the second term of the Old Trinitians Rugby Scrummage, He took over last year from another top rugby player and promoter P. Siva Subramanium. The Annual General Meeting is fixed for Saturday 26th September at 10:00 am. at the CR and FC Old Club house, Longden Place.

The present committee was formed with promoters like vice presidents Ashan Ratwatte and Thakshala Hettiarchchi both were top class players. The secretary Amil Ramanathan and the treasurer is Asanka Ranhotti. The committee was made of top players like Janindra Dunuwille, Nilantha Ratnayake, M.T..L.J. Perera, Harris Omar, Murad Ramzeen, D.N.R. Fernando, Thusith Inok, Lakmal Tennakoon and S.W. Chang.

Channa as he is popularly known was a lock forward who sported the Trinity College jersey in 1988 under Bindu Dandeniya. Then in 1989 he played under Rohan Ranaraja and led Trinitians in the R. Premadasa knockout tournament that year. In 1989 he played a few games for Kandy SC as a schoolboy and had to keep off from rugby due to higher studies.

This year the spread of corona virus has affected the staging of matches, they were able to play only two games against S. Thomas’ College and St. Anthony’s College rest of the matches were halted, even their most looked forward Bradby game against Royal College is held up.

Rugby Scrummage was the brainchild of Kenneth Boteju who played for Trinity in the late 1940’s as a wing three quarter. Boteju started it around 1992 together with his friend Rajah ‘Dabar’ Adihetty. He gathered some former players including M.T.M.Zarook, Dr. Robert Sourjah, Dr. Abeyratne, Dr. Kenneth Gunawardena, Wilhelm Balthazar, and Ken de Joodt.. Dr. Robert Sourjah was the first chairman with Dr. Kenneth Gunawardena as vice chairman, Kenneth Boteju as secretary, DabarAdihetty as treasurer.

With a fifteen member committee in the next few years many stalwarts like Jayantha Jayawardena, Jayantissa Ratwatte, Indrajith Balasooriya who travelled all the way from Matara for meetings joined in. The aim was to help in all aspects of rugby, in an advisory capacity and financial help wherever possible and also getting together of all former players for fellowship.
