Fertilizer for Maha Season without any shortage

The Cabinet of Ministers approved a combined proposal made by the Prime Minister as Finance and the Agriculture Minister to implement an accelerated programme to supply fertilizer for the Maha Season 2020/21.

Co-Cabinet Spokesman Plantations Minister Dr. Ramesh Pathirana told the the weekly Cabinet  media briefing at the Government Information Department, that farmers had to face various difficulties due to the absence of a national fertilizer subsidy policy and the non payment of due amounts to fertilizer importing companies during the previous regime.

Accordingly, the Cabinet of Ministers approved to implement a programme to continue the programme of providing fertilizer to paddy farmers free and also to promote environment friendly fertilizer among farmers.

Dr.Pathirana said that under the above programme, a decision had been taken to import 230,000 metric tonnes of fertilizer required for paddy cultivation with immediate effect. Permission has also been granted for government fertilizer companies to import another 300,000 MTs of fertilizer required for other crops since only a stock of 40,000 MTs of such fertilizer currently raimans in their stores.

“Permission has also been granted for other fertilizer companies to import fertilizer for the Maha season subject to a maximum of 5,000 MTs.

Opportunity has been given to purchase a sack of fertilizer of 50 kilograms required for other crops from the open market to any farmer for a price of Rs. 1500 per sack.
