WHO congratulates Sri Lanka

World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus yesterday congratulated Sri Lanka for eliminating rubella and mother to child transmission of HIV and congenital syphilis. Posting on his Twitter account he said, “I congratulate Sri Lanka for eliminating rubella & mother to child transmission of HIV & congenital syphilis, the Maldives for eliminating rubella and Myanmar for eliminating trachoma. These successes are testimonies that with science, solutions and solidarity we can stop diseases and save lives”.

The WHO verified in July that the Maldives and Sri Lanka have successfully eliminated rubella, making them the first two countries in WHO South-East Asia region to achieve measles and rubella elimination ahead of the 2023 target.
