Rain spoils Jaffna Masters Vs Thomian Masters cricket match

Jaffna Masters mini tour of Colombo and the first match against Thomian Masters ended in no result due to bad weather, played at the Colts ground on September 5.

Thomian Masters winning the toss and elected to bat lost an early wicket in the first over. One down batsman Nalin Jayatilleke together with Ramesh Wannakuwatte got the runs ticking with a second wicket partnership of 26 runs.

With the fall of the second wicket, Amitha Abeynaike joined Nalin Jayatilleke, both as teammates were playing from the age of 11 for St.Thomas College as students, steadied the innings with a partnership of 37 runs for the third wicket. From then onwards wicket fell at regular intervals. Skipper Deepal Ahangama and Laksman Thurairatnam in a 21 runs partnership for the sixth wicket took the Thomians to a defendable total.

In the run chase, Jaffna Masters also losing their wickets at regular intervals and at one stage were six down for 70 runs, S.Kirubananthan with a gallant knock of 34 runs not out including two sixes and three fours and K.Selvarajah 24 not out with four sixes, the pair took the challenge with a 45-run stand for the 7th wicket and the match was called off due to wet condition and bad weather in 19.2 overs, if not the spectators would have witnessed an interesting finish.
