Move vessel away from Sri Lanka: AG

Attorney General Dappula De Livera has paid special attention to move the blazing crude oil tanker ‘MT New Diamond’ vessel lying in Eastern seas out of Sri Lankan waters.

Attorney General’s Coordinating Officer State Counsel Nishara Jayaratne told news media that the Attorney General yesterday held a further discussion with the Chairman of the Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) and Director General of Merchant Shipping to review and advice on issues arising from the fire

aboard the crude oil tanker ‘MT New Diamond’ vessel.

During the meeting they had discussed the steps that have been taken in relation to the responsibility of MEPA and the immediate steps to be taken and, she said.

Further, the need to take joint decisions with the relevant agencies regarding disaster management, especially in the event of an oil spill or leak, was highlighted, she added.

The MEPA Chairman said that it had informed the relevant foreign insurance company in writing on September 4 about three steps to be taken in this regard.

The insurance company was informed by the MEPA that it would take immediate action to control or extinguish the vessel fire, take appropriate measures to prevent oil spills or leaks, and move the ship out of Sri Lankan waters. However, the MEPA chairman highlighted that no response has been received so far from the Insurance Company.

Therefore, the Attorney General focused on the decision to move the vessel from the Sri Lankan waters at the earliest.
