EU to provide Euro 4.9 million to revive tourism

The European Union (EU) will provide a grant of 4.9 million Euros to revive the tourism industry in Sri Lanka hit by the coronavirus pandemic.

EU Ambassador in Sri Lanka Denis Chaibi yesterday told the Tourism Minister Prasanna Ranatunga the grant will be provided with an immediate effect to boost Sri Lanka’s tourism industry in a discussion at the Ministry.

The grant criteria by the EU included formulating a set of tourism operational guidelines, improving CSR projects and community based tourism projects, supporting SME’s and Wellness Tourism, including Ayurveda and Hela Wedakama and upgrading training and health facilities of employees in the sector.

Fifty four hotels run by SMEs will be granted financial assistance. Euro 2,00,000 will be provided for the CSR project with the ILO. while Euro one million will be allocated to develop community based projects in the Central and the Uva Provinces.
