‘About 50,000 Lankans stranded aboard waiting to be repatriated’

About 50, 000 Lankans stranded abroad in the Covid-19 pandemic are waiting to be repatriated in the coming days, Secretary to the Foreign Ministry Admiral Jayanath Colombage yesterday said. He added that repatriating them will take place daily.

“Over 30, 000 persons have been repatriated since the outbreak, while about 50,000 are waiting to be repatriated,” he said.

Colombage said that so far 95 per cent of SriLankan flights have travelled to various destinations, while other airlines, too, had supported in this regard.

“No date has been set to open airports for tourists as repatriation is ongoing. If authorities are ready with necessary health measures, the airports will open. The repatriation, however, will continue despite the opening of airports,” he said.
