Loans for Batticaloa farmers on the cards

Loans from state banks for cultivators and the President’s plans for the uplift of farmers were discussed at a meeting of the Batticaloa district agriculture development committee held at the District Secretariat on Monday (7).

At this meeting presided over by the Batticaloa Government Agent Kalamathy Pathmaraja, it was also emphasized that cultivators should give as much attention to secondary crops as they do to paddy cultivation. The use of organic fertilizer was recommended as inorganic fertilizers were causing kidney diseases. Farmers were also advised on the use of organic manure and the dangers of using inorganic manures.

Permits for sand excavation were also discussed at the meeting, as such permits were being given by the district secretariat. However, the Forest Department was also issuing permits for sand excavation in forest areas. This was causing problems because the Forest Department was not informing the district secretariat.

The subject of water management was also discussed as at present 25 percent of the tanks are full and with the monsoon these tanks would fill up.

Director Central Irrigation Department N. Nagaretnam, Provincial Director Irrigation Department V. Rajagopalasingam, Additional Government Agent Navarubaranjani Mugunthan, Divisional Secretaries, heads of the departments and representatives from the agriculture organizations were present.
