SLAITO discusses potential for adventure tourism

Of the 300-400 globally recognized adventure events taking place only one takes place in Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankan event the Rumble in the Jungle is a mountain bike stage race that takes place over jungles, tea estates, and mountains.

Panellists at a recent Sri Lanka Association of Inbound Tour Operators Webinar felt that there was much scope to improve the scale of adventure tourism in the country. The event was held on 21 August.

Manager Walkers Tours Dhiran Warnakulasuriya highlighted the importance of studying trends in Adventure Tourism and implementing them locally. The growth in trail running in Europe has the potential to bring tourists into Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka is rich in potential for Adventure Tourism. Warnakulasuriya said, “if you are in the hills in knuckles and you see an endemic bird that adds value to what you are doing.”

Founder ARC Adventure Kriss Saunders said that Sri Lanka has a coastline of 1340 km and that only around 2 percent of that area has a coral reef for diving.

He said it was important to implement conservation policies and balance economic activity with protecting wildlife.

Managing Director, No Roads Expectations, Peter Miller said “it is not about just the adventure. It is about culture and food. Sri Lanka has all of that.” Chairman Lanka Sportreizen Thilak Weerasinghe said that Sri Lanka was in a unique situation that there was always a suitable bit of coast for water sports. Weerasinghe said, “if one side has a monsoon then on the Bay of Bengal side, we have a calm sea.”

Weerasinghe noted the need to increase knowledge in the sector to increase its scale.
