UPDATE: Premalal Jayasekera was sworn in as a Ratnapura District Parliamentarian before the Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena at the commencement of the sittings at 1 pm yesterday (8).

The Speaker announced that Premalal Jayasekera for all purposes has been considered as a Parliamentarian and he enjoys all the rights of a Parliamentarian in accordance with the Court of Appeal Order. He contested from the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna and recorded the second highest number of preferential votes from the Ratnapura district. (SM,CN and AM)


Premalal Jayasekara sworn in as MP-Time: 13:52

Premalal Jayasekara, who was sentenced to death, has taken oaths as a Member of Parliament this afternoon.

The Court of Appeal yesterday issued an order directing the Prison authorities to allow Ratnapura District Parliamentarian Premalal Jayasekera to attend Parliament.

Premalal Jayasekera who was sentenced to death over a fatal shooting  that took place in 2015 had filed a writ petition in the Court of Appeal seeking an interim order directing the prison authorities to allow him to attend Parliament.
