Janaka Mendis led Rajans to victory in the 1980 Big Match

Janaka Mendis, former Cricket Captain of Dharmaraja College, Kandy and former player of Moors Sports Club in the premier league cricket tournament in the eighties missed his chance to represent the Country in Cricket as he had to concentrate on his official work at Singer Sri Lanka Limited.

In school he represented the under 12,14,16 and 1st XI Cricket teams under the coaching of Dhammika Vithanage, Harold Ranasinghe and the late T.M.A.Cooray. He was a fine all round Cricketer but rather unfortunate not to score a century in his school and club cricket career. His highest score in school cricket was 96 against Kingswood in the Limited over match in 1981 and in club cricket it was 70 runs against Sebastianites in 1984.He played for 5 years for the first XI cricket team at Dharmaraja College as an all-round Cricketer and his best bowling figure was match bag of 12 for 57 against St.Anthony’s, Katugastota in the year 1979. In that particular match he captured 7 for 17 runs in the 1st innings and 5 wickets for 40 runs in the 2nd Innings. He led the School to victory against Kingswood in their ‘Big Match’ In 1980 and won College Colours and the highest award of ‘Dagaba’ for Cricket. He was also a School Prefect and in his final year in School in the year 1981 he scored eight half centuries and some of them were against Trinity, Ananda, Nalanda, Sri Sumangala, and Zahira, He was selected to the Sri lanka under 19 Pool for the Australian School tour in the year 1980.

He represented Moors Sports Club as an all-round cricketer under the leadership of D.S.de Silva,a former Test Cricket Captain.

He occupied the No.3 position in the Batting order and his other team mates were Anusha Samaranayake, Ishaak Sahabdeen , Marlon Von Haght and all of them represented Sri Lanka in Cricket. Janaka Mendis had to concentrate on his official duties and climbed up the ladder of success as a Director of Singer Sri lanka.
