Massive timber racket in Wanathawilluwa

Nearly 100 acres of forest have been destroyed in the Kuratiyamohotte area in Eluwankulama, Wanathawilluwa.

Ajith Gihan, the organizer of the Wayamba Voice Environmental Organization said the deforestation was carried out with the assistance of a local politician. He mentions that the deforestation has been going on for months using mechanical saws.

Trees have been cut down using mechanical saws and timber sold later and later the forest was set on fire. Environmentalists point out that powerful local politicians in Wanathawillu, as well as several other government officials, were behind the deforestation.

This forest is located close to the Wilpattu National Park. Due to this, elephants and other wildlife in Wilpattu are constantly roaming in this ecosystem. With deforestation, wildlife encroachment on villages cannot be prevented.

Environmentalists also point out that there is a plan to destroy the forest and then secretly sell the land to the rich in the outlying areas.

Therefore, environmentalists are requesting the relevant parties to conduct a formal investigation into this matter immediately. When inquired from Wanathawilluwa Divisional Secretary Chathuraka Jayasinghe, he said that steps have been taken to enforce the law regarding this massive deforestation.
