People in Kurunegala encouraged to plant Kithul

Over 25,000 Kithul saplings will be planted on the hill slopes of the Mawathagama, Galagedara, Dodangaslanda and Hiriyala Divisional Secretary areas in Kurunegala where illicit clearing and distilling liquor largely take place.

The Forest Department will provide the saplings and the Divisional Secretariats of Mawathagama and Ridigama will identify the areas for planting.

Within five years, the trees will be ready for tapping and will provide livelihoods for over 1,000 villagers.

The North Western Province Youth Council will train toddy tappers.
