Maliban to manufacture pharma

Sri Lanka targets 50% self-sufficiency

Maliban Biscuits one of the largest manufacturers, distributors, and marketers of bakery products in Sri Lanka will be diversifying into the manufacture of pharmaceuticals.

An official from the company said that the management has decided to move into the manufacture of pharmaceuticals and detailed information would be spelled out soon.

He said that Maliban officials and 35 local investors also met the Minister of Pharmaceutical Production, Supply, and Regulation Prof. Channa Jayasumana last week.

The local investors pledged to set up pharmaceutical production plants within 30 months investing around Rs. 40 billion with the aim of export as well.

“Fifty percent of the country’s total drug requirement will be manufactured within Sri Lanka and the supply of high quality low price drugs will be ensured,” Prof. Channa Jayasumana said while assuming duties.

“Within the first three years, 50 percent of Sri Lanka’s total drug requirements will be manufactured within the country.

Some expensive imported drugs too will be produced in Sri Lanka in the next 18 months,” he said

Initial arrangements have been made to produce the drugs and discussions are underway to set up another factory to produce cancer drugs.

The Sri Lanka Pharmaceutical Manufacturers’ Association (SLPMA) welcomed the newly elected government’s decision to create a new State Ministry for Pharmaceuticals Manufacture as a crucial positive step towards the strengthening of the local pharmaceuticals industry.

The Association iterated the importance of its contribution to the nation as local manufacturers ensuring the availability of essential pharmaceuticals and expressed its confidence in the government’s vision for the nation.

SLPMA President Sanjaya Jayaratne, Chairman of Navesta Pharmaceuticals, highlighted the importance the state places on a self-sufficient local pharmaceutical manufacturing industry in the country and is an encouragement to the industry. The Board of Investment Director General said that they are planning to have a 200-acre pharmaceutical zone in Hambantota and will get both local and global pharmaceutical manufacturers to set up factories.
