JVP opposed to 20A - AKD

Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said his party does not believe that amending the Constitution or introducing a new Constitution will solve the basic problems faced by the people of the country.

“The 20th Amendment to the Constitution has now been gazetted. We do not believe that the main problem facing our country is the Constitution. We do not believe that the basic problems faced by the people, the problem of lack of law and order, the problems of their daily lives can be solved with this Constitutional amendment effort,” the JVP leader said addressing journalists in Colombo.

“But as the Constitution is the Basic Law of the land. Whether we like it or not, that is the law that governs us as citizens,” Dissanayake added.

Therefore, Dissanayake said changes, additions and deletions made to the Constitution will lead to changes that will have a major impact on the law of the land.

Dissanayake went on to say that the Independent Commissions established under 19A had failed to protect their independence.

“If the Government was to take the country in the direction of democratization, it should have rectified the shortcomings that hindered their independent functioning.

This is what our previous 20th Amendment proposed,” he added.

While noting that the proposed 20A will give wide powers to the President, Dissanayake said the JVP will oppose it as the Constitutional amendment was anti-democratic, destructive and unfavorable to the people.
