Sri Lankans abroad will be repatriated gradually - Pavithra

Sri Lankans employed in foreign countries including in the Middle East will be repatriated gradually, Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi said.

“Sri Lanka can be considered as the only country in the world which has totally eradicated COVID-19 from open society. The country has achieved this success due to the leadership given by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa,” the Minister said.

Minister Wanniarachchi was addressing the media in Colombo recently.

According to Minister Wanniarachchi, around 50,000 Sri Lankans are waiting to return to Sri Lanka but they will be brought down in groups in order to protect other Sri Lankans in the country.

“The Government needs to ensure the safety of the lives of people living in Sri Lanka.

Bringing down Sri Lankan from abroad should be done in a systematic manner according to the capacity available at Quarantine Centres. At present, there are around 65 Quarantine Centres operating with around 10,000 returnees undergoing quarantine. This has to be done in a prudent manner, to prevent any community spread of COVID-19, putting the lives of people in danger,” the Minister added.
