Tuan Jaldin: Remembering a great soul

Born on December 12, 1943, in the salubrious climes of Hatton to my great grandparents Zainul Abdeen Jaldin and Seenar Jaldin, may grandfather was named Tuan Hadjie Jaldin.

He married Zareena Meedin in 1967 and was blessed with five children and fifteen grandchildren. I wish to write a few words in remembrance of my grandfather on his ninth death anniversary which is on September 2.

Having received his primary education at Royal College, he entered Greenlands College (Isipathana), where he excelled in sports and was the first rugby captain of the school. Thereafter, he played for CR & FC for many years and was the rugby manager of CR & FC as well.

Being a reputed athlete in school, my grandfather’s pet event was the 400 metres, and he also took part in the Asian Veterans’ Games held in Singapore in 1986 finishing fourth in his event. He also represented the companies he worked at in cricket, rugby, football, hockey, and table tennis in Mercantile tournaments for many years. All this clearly shows how enthusiastic he was for sports.

While he was engaged in sports, he also pursued his career in many trades, both locally and internationally. On his retirement from active work, my grandfather took up part time work at the Makola Muslim Orphanage, where he loved, cared and looked into their studies and welfare of the children just the way he looked after his children. He was a cheerful person, someone who would love and care for people and was loved by many for his humane touch. He is a true example for a husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend, and great citizen.

It has been nine years since my grandfather left this world and only his memories are left to cherish for the rest of the years to come. He would definitely be happy and proud for where all his children and grandchildren stand today and would send us blessings from wherever he is now. You will always be in our hearts and we miss you.
