A tense situation arose during a protest staged on Thursday by the residents of Halwatura in Bulathsinhala, against an assault on the driver and conductor of a Halwatura – Ingiriya Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) bus.

The assault had taken place on Monday, and the driver and conductor had been admitted to the Ingiriya Hospital for treatment immediately after the incident took place.

The attack was carried out by a group of persons from Piliyandala who had come to bathe at the ‘Nidhan Wala’ in Halwatura, Bulathsinhala.

The group had come in three cars, and the incident had taken place when the driver of the bus had started hitting the horn because one of their cars had been blocking the road, residents said.

Nearly 200 people came to the Bulathsinhala police station to investigate the complaint, but no one from the other party involved in the attack had come to the police station, causing a tense situation among villagers.

The group dispersed after the Bulathsinhala police said that they would call the party involved in the attack on another day and reinvestigate the complaint.

However, villagers were furious at the incident and unanimously decided to make the ‘Nidhan Wala’ a place reserved only for the villagers to bathe and not allow outsiders to use it.
