New Dialysis Unit opened at KDU Hospital

The new dialysis unit of the Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) was opened by Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi, recently. The unit will offer initial dialysis for critical and poor patients free of charge, a Health Ministry spokesman said.

According to the spokesman, the unit consists of 13 modern beds and has introduced Haemodiafiltration for the first time in Sri Lanka for the benefit of kidney patients.

The medical equipment installed at the unit is worth over Rs.50 million, and around 500 rounds of dialysis can be done when these machines are operated in three- to four-hour shifts. There is a staff numbering 20 at the unit that include well-trained doctors, nurses, and technicians, he said.

The KDU Hospital was opened in 2019 with 814 beds, 50 luxury rooms, Accident and ETU wards with 40 beds, and 100 OPD Consultation rooms.

After opening the unit, Minister Wanniarachchi stated that the hospital provides the best example for a leader with a vision and a mission; it shows the targeted work carry out by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. He commenced this hospital with the intention of turning it to the best hospital in the region, she added.
