Parliament Goods Receiving Officer remanded till Sept. 17 over bribery case

The Goods Receiving Officer in the Parliament canteen who was arrested by officials of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) while soliciting a bribe of Rs.60,000 from a fruit supplier, was remanded till September 17 by Colombo Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne yesterday.

When the matter was taken up, Bribery Commission officials informed the Court that the arrest was made in the Kaduwela area, when the suspect was allegedly soliciting the bribe from a fruit supplier.

“The suspect had allegedly solicited a bribe of Rs.30,000 per month from a businessman not to reject his supplies and ensure he would continuously get the order,” Bribery officials added.

The officials further told the Court that the plaintiff had lodged a complaint to CIABOC on August 20. The suspect is a resident of Kaduwela area. The suspect had asked the businessman to come to Kaduwela with the ‘arrears’ for January and February.
