D.H de Silva an outstanding tennis and cricket coach

D.H.de Silva, (popularly known as DH),a veteran cricketer and tennis coach who was attached to the Kandy Municipality as the Municipal Commissioner started training the young boys and girls in Kandy City in Tennis in his leisure time in addition to coaching cricket. Mostly it was the Under 12 children and the prominent youngsters in his tennis team were Sangakkara Brothers – Vemindra & Kumar and some other boys. They had their initial training from D.H.de Silva at the Garden Club Tennis courts,Kandy.

At Trinity College, Kumar Sangakkara started playing Cricket under the guidance of this writer in the under 13 level and after that veteran coaches like Sunil Fernando, Berty Wijesinghe and Bernard Perera did the cricket coaching. Kumar Sangakkara was also coached by D.H.de Silva and Sangakkara became a Sri Lanka Test Cricket Captain and a World class player and at present he is the President of MCC as a non Britisher.

D.H. coached Tennis to the children every Sunday morning and gave them 100 shots each till they were thorough in the Basics. He arranged some tennis classes for Junior Girls at the Garden Club,Kandy who later became National Tennis Champions. Saranga Sangakkara became the National Champion as a student of Mahamaya Girls College after the coaching of D.H. The others who were coached by him were Duleeka Bandaranayake, Tasmin and Vishaka Jayasundera who became National Level players.

D.H.de Silva was the Cricket Captain of the University team and he was a National Player who represented the Cricket Board Eleven. He was the Charity Commissioner of the Colombo Municipality and led the Nomads Cricket team.

His eldest son, Mahinda became National Table Tennis Champion when he was a Student at St.Anthony’s College,Katugastota and his daughter, Gayani was a National level Tennis Player who represented Sri Lanka at many International Tennis tournaments as a student of Mahamaya Girls College,Kandy. His brother D.S. de Silva captained Sri Lanka Test Cricket team while his other brother D.P.de Silva represented Sri Lanka in Cricket before getting Test Status. DH passed away in Melbourne,Australia a few years back.
