Rural tanks to be renovated

The Irrigation Ministry has made arrangements to renovate 14,000 rural tanks countrywide during this month.

A task force would be formed to implement this project under the instructions of Irrigation Minister Chamal Rajapaksa.

Kurunegala District Assistant Director of Agriculture A.M. Jayawardena said that the Irrigation Minister has directed his top officials to utilize the services of officials attached to the Mahaweli Development Ministry to make this programme a reality.

Jayawardena gave these instructions at a meeting of paddy farmers of the Kurunegala district held yesterday at the Bingiriya Agrarian Services Centre in Kurunegala. He said President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has instructed the Agriculture Ministry to take early

measures to restore all usable abandoned village tanks to increase paddy production in order to make the country self-sufficient in rice within a year.

He added that a sum of Rs. 5,500 million would be invested to implement this special project.
