English language training for teachers

Government schoolteachers countrywide whose English language skills are not up to the required level are to receive training to upgrade their skills in this language under a programme to be implemented by the Education Ministry, Kurunegala District senior Education Director W.M. Balasooriya said.

This teacher training programme is to be designed under the instructions of Education Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris to help students in remote government schools to master this international language for their future benefit.

According to the statistics of the Examinations Department, 38 percent of students who appeared for the G.C.E. (O/L) Examination in 2019 failed the English language examination.

A recent survey conducted by the Education Ministry has revealed that about 55 percent of teachers who are in service in remote government schools do not having the required English

language skills. The same statistics also revealed that out of teachers in urban government schools, 29 percent do not have the required level of English language skills.

The Cabinet has already approved the project proposed by the Education Minister, Balasooriya said.
