H.M. Tikiribanda (84), a kidney patient in Galatabendiwewa in the Polpithigama D.S. division, who had lived in a wattle and daub hut with his family was granted a newly constructed house by a philanthropist.

The philanthropist H. M. Somarathne is President of the Pansiyagama SANASA society and President of the Dayaka Sabha of the Na Uyana Monastery in Pansiyagama.

Somarathne has previously constructed several houses at his own expense for several low-income families who lived in wattle and daub huts.

His recent donation was to H.M. Tikiribanda, who lived in a wattle and daub hut with his family including nine grandchildren. The cost of the house is nearly Rs.1,400,000.

Earlier, this philanthropist had donated four newly built houses to low-income families and had completed work on six partially-built houses in the area.

“I am not a wealthy person,” Karunaratne said. “But I have well realised the sufferings of the

poor. We live only for a short period. As the late Prime Minister S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike said, the paramount duty of man is to serve man. Some of my friends too have contributed to this worthy cause. I get satisfaction by these meritorious deeds.”
