Two classic goals by Ahamed Shazny in each half enabled the Colombo Football Club to drub Blue Eagles Sports Club by 4 goals to nil to clinch the inaugural “Vantage FFSL President’s Cup” soccer tournament played at the Sugathadasa Stadium under lights, yesterday.

Ahamed Shazny put up a belligerent performance to take sweet revenge over their rivals, after losing the group stage match. He booted the two fascinating goals in each half when they were in a spot of bother. After Shazny broke the shackles, it became a one-sided affair for the Colombo FC lads, who put the final nail in the coffin to seal a memorable victory and add another trophy to their cabinet.

Colombo FC took some time to settle down as a unit, but as the game progressed, they gradually got into rhythm. They controlled the ball well and made some inroads into their rival’s territory midway in the first half. Their experienced striker Zarwan Johar had a dismal day on the field by missing more than four scoring opportunities within striking range, which ultimately went a-begging.

His co-strikers Mohamed Aakib and Ahamed Shazny were very nippy in the loose play and ran circles around the opponent’s defence. They, too, joined Zarwan in the onslaught, when the ball was in tandem. But their efforts fell short due to their inconsistency of kicking the ball mostly off-target.

Much was expected of Blue Eagles SC but they were completely outplayed in all departments. Their main striker and playmaker Kavindu Ishan was well marked and could not freely execute his plans. The rival defence stood firm and deprived them of sneaking through and scoring. The mounting pressure on the losers put them in total disarray and the winners had a comfortable victory.

In the 31st minute of the first half, Aakib collected a high kick from the midfield and surged ahead from the left flank to fire a left-footed cross. Shazny rose to the occasion to control the ball and gave a power-packed kick which initially rebounded off the crossbar, which he chipped into the goal mouth. The diving Blue Eagle goalie Prabath Ruwan failed to block it and the score line stood 1-0 at breather.

Both teams came out intending to display an improved performance to increase their score line. Blue Eagles made some teasing moves early in the second half, but their rivals fought back gallantly to bounce back and dominate play in all departments. Colombo FC mesmerized their opponents by running circles around their defense, which restricted them to limited options to curtail their firepower. The winners then scored the remaining three goals in the last 20 minutes of the game, which enabled them to secure a convincing win.

For the winners, Ahamed Shazny (2), Furic Momas, and Shabeer Razooniya scored the goals. Sarath Weerasekere, State Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Government, graced the occasion as the chief guest and gave away the awards.
