T.D.R Pieris dominates to win the crown

The leading veteran chess player T.D.R Pieris won the Sri Lanka Senior Chess Nationals concluded at Sathara Auditorium, Maharagama on August 1. The four time National Chess Champion Pieris scoring six points out of 7 games won the championship comfortably.

He was able to maintain unbeaten record in the tournament while drew only two games with Ajantha De Silva and A,H Katugampola and won all other five games with A.J Samuel, Josheph Jayasinghe, Sarath Rupasinghe, Jagath Samarasooriya and A.N.G Piyadasa. Pieris, who was a Sri Lanka National Chess Champion in 1981, 1983,1995 and 2005 was a leading veteran chess player who has participated in many international events in his career. He played in three Chess Olympiads in Switzerland 1982, Greece 1984 and Dubai 1986. He has won the National Senior Chess Championship continuously from the beginning of the event.

Meanwhile Ajantha De Silva has performed well to win the second place with 5.5 points. Ajantha played steadily and drew with champion Pieris in the third round but unfortunately lost to A.H Katugampola in the sixth round to finish at second place. He beat N.A.G Abeywardena, A.N.G Piyadasa, V. Murali, Sarath Rupasinghe and Jagath Samarasooriya in other five rounds.

A.H Katugampola was third with five points. He also drew with T.D.R Pieris in the final round, but had another draw with Jagath Perera in the fifth round and lost to Jagath Samarasooriya in the second round.He beat Bandula Gamaarachchi, N.A.G Abeywardena, V Murali and Ajantha De Silva. Meanwhile Sarath Rupasinghe won the Senior over 65 category convincingly with five points. He lost only to T.D.R Pieris and Ajantha De Silva and beat S. Karthigesu, Jagath Perera, Jagath Samarasooriya, Joseph Jayasinghe and NAG Abeywardena.

The Sri Lanka Senior National Chess Championship was conducted by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka for the players over 50 years. The Event, which is internationally rated was conducted Swiss System in 7 rounds offering Rs. 40,000 cash prizes, trophies and medals.
