‘Government school teachers’ English language skills to be developed’

Government school teachers whose English language skills aren’t up to standard are to be equipped with quality English language skills in the future with a well-designed programme by the Education Ministry, Kurunegala District Senior Education Director W.M. Balasooriya said. Speaking at a recent meeting of school heads in Kurunegala, Balasooriya said that Cabinet has given its approval for the project.

The senior education director added that the program is to be designed under the instructions of Education Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris, with a view to enhance the teachers’ knowledge to help the remote government school students to master the language.

According to the statistics of the Sri Lanka Examinations Department, it has been revealed that 38% of students who appeared for the G.C.E. (O.L.) Examination 2019 has failed the subject, he said.

A recent survey conducted by the Education Ministry has also revealed that about 55% of teachers at government schools do not have proper English skills, Balasooriya said, adding that the same reports also revealed that of teachers at urban government schools, 29% do not have the required level of English language skills.
