Kurunegala farmers allege: Wayamba Ela Project halted

Kurunegala farmers complained that the Wayamba Ela Project, which was launched to provide water to areas in the district where it is scarce, has been halted recently.

The project was to divert water from the Wemedulla Reservoir to eight large tanks and 300 small tanks in order to facilitate the cultivation of 1,200 Kurunegala farmlands.

When inquired about the matter, Mahaweli Authority Director-General Sunil S. Perera said that the project has not been halted. However, he added that there were some obstacles in acquiring lands for the project.

He said it would take a few months for those issues to be settled and that afterwards, the project would resume. Perera added that the project is to be completed within two years.
