Ibbagamuwa parents complain about OL Art teacher shortage

Ibbagamuwa parents have complained that there is a shortage of art teachers for the G.C.E. (O.L.) classes in the area. There are 116 schools and pirivenas in the region, but only 27 Art teachers are employed at them. In most schools, the subject is taught not by Art teachers, but by other subject teachers, they added.

Parents said that furthermore, there are no tuition teachers for Art in the area as well. “Our children would be able to obtain better results and exhibit their talents more if the authorities employed a sufficient number of qualified teachers and provide them with other necessary facilities,” they added.

“We brought this matter to the notice of the former Education Minister, but he did not take any interest in the matter,” parents said. When inquired about the matter, former Ibbagamuwa Arts Director Malini Menike said that the best solution is to recruit retired Art teachers and appoint them to schools and pirivenas on contract basis as there was a general shortage of Art teachers throughout the Northwestern Province.
