NOCPCO head warns about transmission of COVID-19

Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, Head, National Operation Centre for Prevention of COVID-19 Outbreak (NOCPCO), Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army states that in the past 48 hours, a total of 80 COVID-19 infected individuals who had arrived from foreign lands have been reported raising the total in the country to 1188 persons, inclusive of 42 foreigners and 1146 Sri Lankan expatriates. 182 such arrivals from foreign countries are still under treatment.

It is apparent that the COVID-19 virus gains entry into the island through Sri Lankan expatriates and foreigners arriving here on essential official assignments, although no positive case was reported from our social surroundings after 30th April 2020.

Sri Lanka has been rated as a global model, successful in the control of this deadly virus due to its effective control mechanism. In this background, it is essentially emphasized that all of us should continue to adhere to health practices further, such as use of facial masks, social distancing, frequent wash of hands and covering of mouth while sneezing with a piece of cloth or the elbow, etc.

With the opening of classes in all schools, all principals and teachers in particular should take necessary steps, together with parents to educate school children on the need to practice those health guidelines both inside and outside schools as a compulsory requirement.

Likewise, it is the responsibility of all Sri Lankans to prevent recurrence of any outbreak since ours is a land that controlled the epidemic while fulfilling one's own social commitment and responsibility towards society, he further emphasized.
