With the inaugural “Vantage FFSL President’s Cup” soccer tournament has reached its final stage with Colombo Football Club taking on Blue Eagles Sports Club on Wednesday, Daily News decided to get the views and their feedbacks on this tournament from the respective chairman’s of the clubs.

Saif Yusoof, the Chairman of Colombo FC said that this was a much-needed tournament to promote sport and football in Sri Lanka during the times of crisis. However, they have missed two years of Professional League Football due to various reasons Nevertheless, they are happy to see at least during a Pandemic the Football Federation of Sri Lanka(FFSL) was able to execute a

wonderful invitation tournament in a short period of time.

He further stressed that Colombo FC had incurred the largest financial loss in their history and the worst that they didn’t have anything to show for it, as they didn’t even get to play league football. Football costs are very high and especially when Clubs are expected to maintain AFC status and Super League Requirements. With these expectations and constant requirements, we have had no financial assistance from anyone except the sponsors.

This tournament at least paid every club a round of funds so that they may sustain and play this tournament. This financial benefit was welcomed on behalf of all clubs.

They think the Football Federation has done its best to conduct this tournament in the best possible manner in their capacity. Of course one must be mindful about the facilities and health requirements that need to be provided by the organizers in regards to Covid-19 as this disease spares no one.

They are grateful that the FFSL is doing what it can to promote football. “The all-important final match is going to be a tough one. Blue Eagles have defeated us many times including the last encounter. We will need to pull something special to turn this in our favour. God Willing!” said Saif Yusoof.
