Cabinet to discuss amending 19th Amendment at next meet

The Cabinet will discuss the prospects for amending the 19th Amendment in full when it meets next, Water Supply Minister Vasudewa Nanayakkara told the media at a press briefing at his ministry, yesterday.

He said,” it seems difficult to fully amend it.”

“We have rejected this amendment right from the start,” he said,” To bring the functions of the government to a higher level. The present Constitution’s electoral system, the government’s structure and functions requires urgent change.” “some have gone to town on a 20th amendment they say is planned by us targeting just one person. These are baseless accusations because we have not received any draft constitution yet,” he said..

“We have only received the amendments that we expect to introduce. At present a committee has been appointed to prepare the new draft constitution,” he said.
