Substandard sand racket in Matale

Substandard sand has been sold by organised groups in Matale saying that the sand was excavated from the Mahaweli River.

Therefore, those who are in the construction field are facing severe difficulties, building contractors said.

They said that a cube of sand is sold at Rs.10,000.

Now there is a big demand in the market for sand from rural streams. The contractors said they have to halt their work since they cannot carry out construction with substandard sand.

Illegal sand mining in the protected areas of the district is increasing rapidly intensifying environmental pollution.

The contractors urged the authorities to take steps against those who sell substandard sand.
