Gintota Plywood Factory employees staged a protest demanding their salaries in front of the Halle De Galle, while the first District Coordinating Committee meeting under the new Government was in progress there recently.

The protesters said that they have been employed at the factory for 22 years and on March 17, the factory owner abruptly closed down the factory without paying their February salary.

They said that they were not given any compensation and the machineries of the factory are allegedly going to be sold.

The workers requested the intervention of the Government to ensure them the justice.

Plantation Minister Ramesh Pathirana met the protestors and listened to their grievances. He contacted the Labour Commissioner over the phone and urged him to look into the employees’ issue and resolve their problems soon.
