Dr. Harini Amarasuriya nominated as JJB National List MP

Rights activist and academic Dr. Harini Amarasuriya has been nominated for the National List seat of the National People’s Power (NPP) led by the JVP. Dr Amarasuriya is a Senior Lecturer at the Social Studies Department of the Open University. She holds a PhD in Social Anthropology from the University of Edinburgh in the United Kingdom.

A NPP spokesman told the Daily News that the party officially informed about the appointment to the National Election Commission yesterday. With this decision, former MP Bimal Rathnayake, who was in the NPP National List, will not be able to enter Parliament. JVP former MPs Sunil Handunnetti, Dr.Nalinda Jayatissa and Nihal Galappatti have also lost their seats. The NPP only secured three seats at the last General Election including one National List slot. JVP Leader Anura Dissanayake and Vijitha Herath have made it to the new Parliament and the Party has decided to offer the National List seat to Dr. Amarasuriya. With her appointment, the female representation of the new Parliament has increased to 11. Eight female MPs were elected and another two females are among the 17 National List MPs nominated by the SLPP.

Dr. Amarasuriya is a member of the National Intellectuals Organization, a civil group linked to the NPP. She was involved in developing the Party’s policies related to education. She was a former Secretary of the Federation of University Teachers’ Associations (FUTA).She was a member of the Committee to obtain public views on Constitutional reforms.

She has worked with a couple of local NGOs mainly on gender, child protection and psychosocial issues.
