UPDATE:  Mass Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella yesterday stated he would never suppress the media and will take all possible measures to ensure media freedom and the right to information.

The Minister addressing the media after assuming duties as Mass Media Minister at the Ministry premises said he will move forward with a deliberate effort to improve competitiveness in State media institutions.

Quoting President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s request from the public “I request you to do your duty and I will fulfill my duty towards you,” Minister Rambukwella said that the people of this country have already fulfilled their duty by forming a strong government and it was more than what they expected.

“Securing a two-thirds majority in Parliament was considered as almost impossible after the promulgation of 1978 Constitution by late President J.R.Jayewardene. But the people of this country granted a historic victory to the ruling party at the General election held on August 8. So together all of us have a prime responsibility to work for the betterment of the people of this country,” the Minister said.

Commenting on new state minister portfolios, the Minister said that each and every state minister was given a target by assigning subjects that need to be improved to achieve economic growth. Attraction of more and more new investments and the expansion of export oriented domestic production capacities are two major development paths that the government need to be addressed.

“People have high expectations from the newly formed government to develop the country and they firmly believe that President Gotabaya can do that “ he said.

Postal Services and Media Professionals Development State Minister Sathasivam Viyalendran also addressed the occasion.
