Worldwide COVID-19 cases top 20 mn

FRANCE: It took six months for the world to reach 10 million confirmed cases of the COVID-19 coronavirus. It took just over six weeks for that number to double.

At least 20,382,260 COVID-19 cases have been registered in 196 countries and territories as at yesterday. Of these, at least 12,347,300 are now considered recovered.

The novel coronavirus has killed at least 743,199 people since the outbreak emerged last December, according to a tally from official sources compiled by AFP.The tallies, using data collected by AFP from national authorities and information from the World Health Organization (WHO), probably reflect only a fraction of the actual number of infections.

Many countries are testing only symptomatic or the most serious cases.

Since Tuesday, 6,605 new deaths and 259,064 new cases were recorded worldwide. Based on latest reports, the countries with the most new deaths were Brazil with 1,274 followed by the United States with 1,110 and Mexico with 926.

The United States is the worst-hit country with 164,545 fatalities from 5,141,879 cases.

At least 1,714,960 people have been declared recovered.

After the US, the hardest-hit countries are Brazil with 103,026 deaths from 3,109,630 cases, Mexico with 53,929 from 492,522 cases, United Kingdom with 46,526 from 312,789 cases and India with 46,091 from 2,329,638 cases.

The country with the highest number of deaths compared to its population is Belgium with 85 fatalities per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by the United Kingdom on 69, Peru 65, Spain 61, and Italy 58.

China -- excluding Hong Kong and Macau -- has to date declared 84,737 cases (25 new since Tuesday), including 4,634 deaths and 79,342 recoveries.
