Prisons open for visitors from August 15

Prisons will be open for visitors from August 15 adhering to health guidelines against coronavirus, the Prison Department yesterday announced.

Prison Commissioner Chandana Ekanayake said that every prisoner will get a visit once a week.

The visitors will not be allowed to bring food items to the prisons, but clothes and sanitary goods for inmates, he said.

“The visitors must wear face masks and follow health guidelines,” he said. “The time for visits will remain normal as per the Prison Department regulations,” he said.

Hand washing, sanitising and checking temperature will be carried out on visitors before their entry to the prisons.

The prisons have been closed to visitors since July 8 following an inmate tested positive for COVID-19.
