Ranil to step down as UNP leader

UPDATE: Former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has decided to step down as the leader of the United National Party (UNP), it was disclosed yesterday.

When the Daily News contacted UNP General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariayawasam, he stated that Wickremesinghe has decided to step down from the leadership with aim of appointing a new leader.

Accordingly, the names of Ravi Karunanayake, Daya Gamage, Vajira Abeywardana and Akila Viraj Kariyawasam were nominated for the party leadership. Kariyawasam stated that this decision was taken at the Parliamentary Group Meeting which was held at Siri Kotha yesterday.

Moreover, Kariyawasam said the final decision on the party leadership will be taken tomorrow (12) and the recommendation will be presented to the UNP Working Committee on Friday.

Kariyawasam also said that one of the above four will be selected with the consent of Wickremesinghe.

The UNP National List Representative to Parliament will be decided on Friday after the new leader is appointed.
