The people of Sri Lanka have shown their approval of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa’s administration by electing his brothers former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, Chamal Rajapaksa and nephews Namal Rajapaksa, Shashindra Rajapaksa and Nipuna Ranawaka to Parliament with Mahinda Rajapaksa, Namal Rajapaksa, Shashindra Rajapaksa and Nipuna Ranawaka receiving the most preferential votes in the Kurunegala, Hambantota, Moneragala and Matara Districts respectively.
Mahinda Rajapaksa, a former President and Prime Minister and an elder brother of the incumbent President received 527,364 preference votes which was an overwhelming 81.13% of the 649,965 votes the SLPP received in the District.
In the Hambantota District, Mahinda Rajapaksa’s eldest son Namal topped the SLPP list while Chamal Rajapaksa, another elder brother of President Rajapaksa was placed fourth.
Namal received 166,660 preferential votes from the 280,881 votes cast for the SLPP while former Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa received 85,330 preferences. Chamal Rajapaksa’s son Shashindra Rajapaksa topped the SLPP list in the Moneragala District with 104,728 preferential votes or 50.3% of the 208,193 votes the SLPP received in Moneragala. Another of President Rajapaksa’s nephews Nipuna Ranawaka received the most number of preferential votes in the Matara District. Ranawaka received 131,010 which was 37.19581% of the 352,217 votes polled by the SLPP.
