Colombo Port back to normal

Colombo Port activities have come to normal by now after the three day strike campaign launched by port employees last week.

Colombo port employees launched a trade union action last Thursday against the privatisation of the Eastern Terminal of the Colombo Port. The strike campaign was carried out by 32 trade unions claiming that the government was planning to privatise the Eastern Terminal of Colombo Port. The protesters further demanded the government to install the three cranes, which had been delivered at the Eastern terminal.

Following a discussion with Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, who pledged that the Eastern Terminal would run under the Colombo Port, the protesters gave up their strike on Sunday.

The Prime Minister had said that privatisation was not the agenda of this government. The functions of the port came to a standstill due to the strike action but now the entire port is functioning as usual.
